Join Dr. Jenny Cox as she shares her journey to becoming a mathematics professor and explores how gender norms impact women in STEM. She'll discuss factors that contribute to math anxiety, highlight inspiring women problem-solvers from history, and explain the importance of male allies and supportive teams in STEM fields.
This speaker series was created in honor of Sister Monica Zore as a way to mark her many contributions to the university and to bring Marian students into contact with prominent scholars in the mathematical sciences. Sister Monica Zore was a member of the Sisters of St. Francis at Oldenburg (and an alumnus of Marian College) who taught mathematics and mathematics education courses at Marian for 39 years. She was often the voice of conscience regarding the university’s Franciscan heritage and ethos as she guided the department through the years. Her willingness to speak truth to power, and her commitment to teaching all students to love mathematics, are enduring values that the department maintains to this day.
The speaker series showcases scholars in the mathematical sciences (mathematics, mathematics education, statistics, and computer science) who, in the spirit of Sister Monica, honor Marian's Franciscan values and seek transformative change in our world. The inaugural year of the series will focus on scholars whose work specifically addresses issues of equity, inclusion, and justice.
The talks will be free and open to the public. Neighbors of the college, students at other institutions, high school students, and members of the surrounding Indianapolis community are especially encouraged to attend. The series is generously supported by the Department of Mathematical and Computational Sciences at Marian.
