STEM-U Alternative Route STEM Licensure (grades 5-12)

Teach your passion with skill and confidence.

Designed for individuals with a bachelor’s degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics field who want to become grade 5–12 STEM teachers, this accelerated online licensure program engages candidates in research-based pedagogical practices and the opportunity to apply those practices through embedded clinical experiences—both of which are critical components of becoming a highly effective STEM educator.

Phase 1: Curriculum and Instruction in the STEM Classroom (EDU-601)

Participants begin by developing the skills to plan, deliver, and manage effective, technology-rich instruction, grounded in learning science.

Focus areas:

  • Designing standards-aligned lessons and units
  • Crafting engaging instructional activities
  • Integrating multiple modalities and representations
  • Developing safe, accessible laboratory experiences
  • Leveraging digital media, learning management systems (LMS), and other technologies to maximize student learning
  • Proactive classroom management strategies
  • Clinical experiences integrated to connect theory and classroom practice

Phase 2: Assessment in the STEM Classroom (EDU-602)

Participants learn and exercise the skills to design, interpret, and act on assessment evidence to improve student learning.

Focus areas:

  • Planning for and interpreting a range of assessment data - diagnostic, formative, and summative
  • Designing valid and reliable measures
  • Using feedback loops anchored in student work to close learning gaps
  • Clinical experiences integrated to connect theory to classroom practice

Phase 3: Meeting the Needs of All Learners in the STEM Classroom (EDU-603)

Participants design and adapt classroom instruction and assessments that meet the needs of all learners, including English Language Learners, students with disabilities, and students with exceptionalities.

Focus areas:

  • Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS)
  • Evidence-based cooperative learning strategies
  • Professional teaching standards
  • Clinical experiences integrated to connect theory to classroom practice.

To be eligible for admission, applicants must:

  • Hold a bachelor’s degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics field from a CHEA and USDE accredited institution.
